On Friday, April 21, Startup Tucson and City High School partnered to host the first Demo Day for City High students. Nine student teams competed for the opportunity to advance and pitch their startup idea at SEED SPOT NEXT in Phoenix on May 6, to a crowd of 13,000.
City High Demo Day celebrated the conclusion of City High School’s Social Entrepreneurship course taught by Krista Gypton. The course took students through the entrepreneurial journey where they learned real world lessons about what it takes to solve problems through innovation. Throughout the course, the student teams identified problems in the world, created viable solutions to those problems, and conducted market research to validate their solutions and to generate impact. From this process, the students built their innovative business ideas.
Each team delivered three-minute pitches to a panel of judges, including Aaron Gopp, Founder of Localoop; JP Martin, CEO of Brimstone Media; Becky Pallack, Innovation Team at the Arizona Daily Star; and Justin Williams, Founder and CEO of Startup Tucson.
Taking third place and winning free passports to the TENWEST Festival was SLIP, short for Sustainable Living in Your Pocket that aims to solve the problem of pollution and environmental damage by producing a gamified app for making sustainable improvements to one’s environment.
In second place and also winning passports to TENWEST Festival was N/O, a group of two middle school girls working to change the way we talk about rape by introducing a curriculum around rape culture into middle schools and high schools.
The first place winners of one-on-one coaching with both Startup Tucson and Localoop to perfect their pitches was ELO. ELO’s goal is to solve the problem of language barriers and language learning faced by children and teens whose first language is not English through the creation of an interactive fantasy board game.
All teams who participated walked away with Startup Tucson t-shirts and will have the chance to pitch to small groups of mentors for opportunities to continue growing their businesses.
Congratulations to all of the teams, and good luck at SEED SPOT NEXT, Team ELO!
